Tips to learn phrasal verbs and idioms

I recommend reading novels of all sorts.  Memorizing rules (to which there are always exceptions) or reading lists of idioms (which will be only a sampling) will only get you so far in learning a new language.  Novels will use language in the same way that people talk, rather than how they write academically.  Read as much and as often as you can.
