Understand vs Understood

Even though this question has been asked before, I wanted to understand this in another context.

For example, you had a conversation with someone earlier in which you decided the other person is going to write a report. When referring to your understanding of the conversation a few days later, would you say:

a) I understand, you will be writing the report.
or
b) I understood, you will be writing the report.

Which one of the above is correct?

Thank you in advance.
