Why can we use the Adverb "back" after the Linking Verb "is" in the sentence "He is back."?   I thought a Linking Verb could not be followed by an Adverb.

You are totally mistaken. The be verb “is” links “He” and “back”. Back describes his state of being. The linking verb connects between the subject to the noun or adjective and is something like an equal sign. He is back. -- He = back.
