What is correct?

The local media is calling for comment.

The local media are calling for comment.

This can be a tough call at times, similar to data and datum. Media is the plural of medium, and normally will use a plural verb.  If you are thinking of the media as a unit, it can take a singular verb.  Your example could fall into this category, but I like it better treated as a plural.


The local media are also calling for comment.
