Use of common words and phrases

When (in years) did the common usage of the slang word "SWELL" quickly get replaced with the slang word "COOL" in America?  I know it was between 1940 to 2000, but I need to have a close-fitting timeline of this phenomenon. Any help would be...swell.

Try the Online Etymology Dictionary for more information. It states that the use of cool as a "general term of approval" started in the late 1940's. I would not call this a phenomenon at all. Slang terms are constantly changing, and the words to show approval, that something is great or excellent, are probably ones that change most frequently.
