This is a string of four prepositional phrases

Below the surface - Below is the preposition, and surface is the object.

of the Atacama desert - Of is the preposition, and Atacama Desert is the object.

in the north - In is the preposition, and north is the object.

of the country - Of is the preposition, and country is the object.

'The' is an article modifying the object in each phrase.
