"Struggle" + infinitive = transitive?

"Gertrude struggled to lug the bag up the steps." Would you say the infinitive "to lug" is the direct object of the word "struggle"? The dictionaries that I consulted said "struggle" was an intransitive verb, and I can't think of any other time that it would be transitive.
