punctuation within a quotation

if the text within the quotation is a question, but the sentence itself is declarative, should one use a question mark or period at the end of the sentence?

See example:

"What kind of treasure am I storing up," asks the concerned disciple.

You use a period at the end of the sentence, but you use a question mark (not a comma) before the end quotation mark. "What kind of treasure am I storing up?" asks the concerned disciple.
