Is it "a lot" or "much"?

I have a friend who says much in places when I would say a lot.  She is around sixty years old, a friend of the family.  So I was wondering if this was some old way of speaking or is she right about it.  For example, She would say, Oh looks like you don’t have much fruit left. (at a party)  It sounds strange to me, I would say Oh, looks like you don’t have a lot of fruit left.  I am not going to say anything to her about it … Just wondering! (By the way, French is my native language but I have been in the US for a long time.)
