Abbreviation "spp." or whole word "species" following genus name in a publication

Should one be allowed to abbreciate the word "species" as "spp." in a publication that concerns the ecology of a genus - e.g. should they be referred to as "Peridinium spp."    or "Peridinium species" throughout, or doesn't it really matter?  (Thank you for your thoughts on this!)
