Change the tense to present perfect, since their relationship got better in the past and is still better now:
She and Pam have had a better relationship since their trip south.
Also, if you're using "south" to mean the region of the U.S. known as the South, it should be capitalized. (But if you're just talking about how they went somewhere south of where they were before, then it's not needed.)
