The modal verb "can" actually does not get into a verb phrase with "not be held" in your sentence. "Be" is helping verb here, not modal. Although the idea in the sentence is pretty clear, I would suggest the following changes:

 

..., Christians can look ahead (here I would add to what they can look ahead) without being held captive by...
