Choose the correct option in the underlined part of the below sentence:

 

The violence is ( a part/ part ) of a trend of increasing militant attacks since the start of the year, which claimed more than 1,000 lives in May alone.

 

Kindly also explain.

As a native speaker, I can say that both are correct, but that I would not use "a part" because it sounds too similar to "a trend."

Confused...Are the attacks becoming more militant or are the militant attacks increasing in number? If they are becoming more militant, then would it be better to phrase it: "The violence is a part of the trend of increasingly militant attacks"? If the militant attacks are increasing in number, then I like Kimberly's answer.
