Passive voice is where the subject of the sentence receives the action of the verb. Here is a simple pair of sentences to illustrate the difference.

John hit the ball.  This is active voice. 'John' is the subject and is performing the action of hitting the ball.

The ball was hit by John. This is passive voice. 'Ball' is the subject, but it is being acted on. Notice that 'was' is included in the verb. There will always be some form of the verb 'to be' in a passive sentence.
