Is "remember" form is correct in this sentence or should it be remebered?

she was able to understand their problems as she remembers her own troubles.

For the verb to be consistent, I think "remembered" will be a better choice.

She was able to understand their problems as she remembered her own troubles.

I agree - it makes far better sense to keep both verbs in the past.
