whats wrong with this sentence?

1.) The Baudelaire children were left orphans, they suffered through a series of unfortunate events.

"Were left orphans" also seems strange to me. 

 

I think it would be better to say: "were orphaned" or "were left as orphans."

1.) The Baudelaire children were left as orphans.  They suffered through a series of unfortunate events. You had missed out a period at the end of a word 'orphans'. Capitalize the word 'they'.
