Contractions

0

I have a note on an academic paper to "avoid using contractions" and I do not know what that means.

See example:

It has been said that it takes more faith to believe in evolution than in creation and I would not only agree but also include atheism, humanism, and naturalism.

Contractions are words that are shortened by leaving out letters. An apostrophe is used to represent the missing letters.

do not =don't

cannot = can't

you are = you're

they are =they're.

There are many, many others.
