How do I fix this?

See example:

Again, I met with Dr. xyz to go over what I could do differently and he explained that the second paper's grading rubric was a lot stricter and that the grade was not a cause for alarm.

I suggest breaking this down into two sentences.  It seems that the second paper has already been graded, so I have to wonder about the tense of doing something differently.  “Go over” is quite informal.  Depending on the purpose of the writing, I would consider using something other than slang.

Again, I met with Dr. Xyz to discuss what I could have done differently.  He explained that the second paper’s grading rubric was a lot stricter and that the grade was not a cause for alarm.
