Correct apostrophe usage in this sentence

"The Smiths' have a lot of experience in educational support." Does the plural of Smith in this sentence require an apostrophe after it? I'm trying to mark a student's paper and have gone completely blank! It's been a very long day.

No. The apostrophre is never required for the plural -- only the possessive. In this sentence, the Smiths possess nothing.

Agree. Definitely not needed.
