Today there are less than a few hundred thousand Ainu people left.

 

Why use "less" but not "fewer"?  Which is correct --"less people" or "fewer people"?

"Fewer people' is correct. If you can count them, it's fewer. If you weigh them, it's less.

Less water.

Less sand.

Fewer grains of salt.

Less salt.
