why did it not correct were over the correct word was

It probably interpreted this as a condition sentence requiring the subjunctive mood. I think that neither 'was' nor 'were' is correct. Since 'check' is the present tense, 'is' should be used to have these verbs agree in time. Remember to capitalize the first word of every sentence. It should be 'to see', not 'too see'.
