Use of "a" or "an" when using an article for a numerically expressed amount

For example - if using a numerically expressed amount, when the word describing the number begins with a vowel, would you say "I would like to make a $100,000 payment", or "I would like to make an $100,000 payment"?

See example:

I would like to make an $100,000 payment.

In this example you should use 'a'. One hundred thousand starts with the 'W' sound, and the sound determines the article in most cases.
