use of past tense
would you write "something may have come up" or "something may have came up" when talking about the past?

The issue here is that "come" is an irregular verb.
In perfect tenses (tenses that use 'have'), you use the past participle ('come'), not the past simple ('came'). So, 'something may have come up' is correct.
