comparative and superlative

I wish to know from you that can we use more clever and most clever for comparing or cleverer and cleverest is only correct?  I am  unable to check the former use anywhere in the grammar books.

Either one is correct. Cleverer and cleverest are awkward to say, so more and most  are good options.
