Linking verbs

Two questions:

Is the verb "to mean" a linking verb?

Also, how would you underline the core of this sentence:

"The word boreal means 'located in northern areas' "

I an having trouble here because I can't figure out if "word" or "boreal" is the subject of the sentence (I think it is boreal, but I'm not sure).  Also,  if "to mean" is a linking verb, then does that mean that the entire phrase "located in northern areas" is functioning as an noun?

Here's a similar sentence:

His Native American name means "Thunder Traveling over the Mountains."
