article use

Recently I came across this sentance: "I don't have a bad handwriting".

Is it necessary to use the indefinite artice in this case? It just doesn't "sound" right to me.

You do not need the 'a' in this sentence. Uncountable nouns, such as 'handwriting' do not take the article 'a' or 'an'.
