I have a degree in Physics.

Applicants must have a degree in Sociology.

Are "Physics" and "Sociology" capitalized?

This is a gray area, Sanjay. Depending upon the audience (say University professors) and the context of how used, these words may be considered proper nouns ... thus capitalized.

The Chicago Manual of Style, while recognizing that these words are sometimes capitalized, discourages their capitalization -- except when they are part of a larger title or formal name.

Professor of Physics Jacobson, the Department of Sociology, the Sociology Department.

I hope this helps.
