is the use of THEIR and THEY correct in the sentence :One should help THEIR friends if THEY can ?

There have been several discussions recently on using a plural pronoun with a singular antecedent. (one singular, their/they plural). It is more accepted than it once was, and many people will have no problem with it. I would change it because I like the number agreement, but it can sometimes be awkward to rewrite a sentence. The lack of a third person singular pronoun in English can be a problem, but efforts to create these pronouns have all been met with failure.
People should help THEIR friends if THEY can?
