For answer please check "second conditional" below:

There are four conditionals

The zero conditional:

Algorithm = if + present simple + present simple
Ex: If you mix blue and yellow you get green
Ex: If you add 2 + 2 you get 4

This conditional is very mathematical and philosophical and should only be used as an axiom, or apriori universal truths.

The first conditional:

Algorithm = if + present simple + will
Ex: If it rains tomorrow, I'll stay at home
Ex: If I get too drunk I'll pull a sicky at work the next morning

This conditional is used to talk about aposteriori future possibilities that are highly probable! This is one we should use more often in everyday situations (plus the two following conditionals below).

The second conditional:

Algorithm = if + subjunctive + would + base form of verb
Ex: if I were (subjunctive - NOT WAS!) you I'd go to bed
Ex: if I won the lotto I'd fly round the world

This conditional is used to talk about a hypothesized highly improbable situation or parallel universe, and therefore often for dreams and desires!

The third and last but not least conditional:

Algorithm = if + had + past participle + would have + past participle

Ex: if I hadn't gone to the party I wouldn't have met Daisy (for more examples see below)

This conditional is used to look back in time with a hindsight/mental bias i.e. (id est ) a personal preference.

This is an interesting one because you can look back with hindsight bias in 4 different ways e.g.:

1) Past actions committed with regret     - Ex: If I hadn't gone to the party I wouldn't have had the car accident 2) Past actions committed with approval     - Ex: If I hadn't gone to the party I wouldn't have met Julia 3) Past actions not committed with regret     - Ex: If only I had gone to the party, I would have met some interesting people 4) Past actions not committed with approval     - Ex: If I had gone to the party I would have missed the best soccer match on TV last night
