'A lot' is one word combination, and when we talk about it we say it 'is' written with two words.

I think all of you missed the point, the question is whether we should use singular or plural verb. I think you should say 'a lot' is two words, because you refer to it as a single item.

I believe it's supposed to be two words, although sometimes it's written as one word.
