Acquaintance can have several meanings.
It can be a friend.
He is an acquaintance of mine.
It can mean familiarity.
We had an acquaintance once, but haven't spoken in years.
It can also be a verb in another form.
I need to acquaint myself with that.

An acquaintance is not the same as a friend; the relationship is much more superficial than friendship and usually devoid of any emotional warmth or connection. An acquaintance is someone you merely know and socially interact with on a superficial level.
There is no common synonym for acquaintance; if the person is only someone you know, but not a friend, you can say 'I know him slightly, but we're not friends'. 'I know her to say hi' is also another expression that people use to describe acquaintances.
