In active voice sentences:
The subject of the verb performs the action, John in the following sentence.
John hit the ball.
The object of the verb receives the action. Ball in the following sentence.
John hit the ball.
In passive voice sentences:
The subject of the verb receives the action. Ball in the following sentence.
The ball was hit by John.
What was the subject of the verb now becomes the object of the preposition, John in the following sentence.
The ball was hit by John.
