1st paragraph: 'were dismantled' in 2nd last sentence.

2nd paragraph: 'was filled' in 1st sentence, and 'were lifted' in last sentence.

3rd paragraph: 'was being transferred'.

To reach Hong Kong, one has first to enter the southern treaty port of Canton (nowadays 广州 guǎngzhōu, its proper Chinese name), as it was then known. It was one of the five Chinese treaty ports opened by the humiliating ‘Treaty of Nanking’, signed in 1842 at the end of the first Opium War between Britain and China. The other ports were Fuzhou, Xiamen, Ningbo and Shanghai. With successive punitive wars, these treaty ports were an increasing trend of encroachment by the foreign imperialistic powers into the interior of China along the Yangtze River; this included Nanjing, Wuhan, and eventually Chongqing (Sichuan Province). One must remember it was fashionable to be an imperialist; they all wanted their fair share and they grabbed it. The treaty ports were dismantled after communist forces took over all of mainland China. They entered into Canton on October 14, 1949.

However during this post-war period it was filled with a chaotic flood of people fleeing the mainland with the British working feverishly to re-impose their authority and establish some normalcy. This was the Hong Kong that we entered into. Hong Kong's post-war recovery was astonishingly swift. By November 1945, the economy had recovered so well that the government controls were lifted, the free markets restored.

In effect, the ‘Jewel of the Far East’ as the foremost financial centre was being transferred from Shanghai to Hong Kong during this time. (Source Wikipedia)

The examples of passive voice in the first paragraph and in the third are appropriate. In the second paragraph, however, I suggest rewording into active voice.

" it was filled with a chaotic flood of people fleeing the mainland" -- People fleeing the mainland flooded China as immigrants.

"the government controls were lifted" -- that the government lifted its controls.
